Avelo Management Announces Base Closures, End to ICE Flying
January 9, 2026 - Earlier this week, Avelo management announced a “realigning” of operations. This includes closing bases in AZA, RDU, and ILM, and removing six 737-700 NG. These changes will be effective January 27th.
With the closure of AZA, ICE flying is ending according to management:
“With the closure of AZA, we will conclude our participation in the DHS charter program. The program provided short-term benefits but ultimately did not deliver enough consistent and predictable revenue to overcome its operational complexity and costs.”

This is exactly what we told management from the beginning — ICE flying would be bad for the airline! Good that it is finally ending. We’re hopeful that with the end of the ICE flying and new financing, the future is more stable for Flight Attendants at Avelo.
The airline industry is constantly changing, but our Avelo AFA siblings faced far too much change, including operating certain flights they didn’t originally sign up for. AFA Legal is pressing management for additional details on the required benefits in any surplus or furlough scenario. We are supporting Avelo Flight Attendants and using the structure of our union to seek first right of interview at other AFA airlines.
